The Italian Eurofighter aircraft detachment has conducted missions in Romania, providing Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) combat service to respond quickly to possible violations of NATO airspace. During this period, the Italians accumulated approximately 300 flight hours, responding to 'Alpha Scramble' alerts and participating in bilateral exercises with the Romanian Air Force's F-16 aircraft.
Their activities included training with Romanian helicopters and unmanned aerial systems, as well as cooperation with the British Eurofighter Typhoon detachment. The mission was integrated into the Eastern Sentry operation, aimed at strengthening the defense of NATO's eastern flank. With the departure of the Italian detachment, responsibilities will be taken over by the Spanish Air and Space Forces, and the mission will transform from Air Policing to Air Defence, aiming for a more flexible approach in NATO air defense. Italy will continue to contribute to the security of the eastern flank with Eurofighter aircraft deployed in Lithuania.
