Romania is participating in NATO’s annual nuclear deterrence exercise Steadfast Noon 2026, organized this year in Italy, with three F-16 aircraft of the Romanian Air Force, the Ministry of National Defence announced on Friday. The exercise aims to verify the procedures, level of preparedness, and interoperability of allied forces, as well as to maintain a credible and effective NATO nuclear deterrence capability.
Steadfast Noon takes place every autumn, on a rotating basis, in training areas in the northern or southern parts of allied territory. Romania’s participation is intended to strengthen the training of military personnel, cooperation among allied forces, and NATO cohesion.
The Ministry of National Defence states that the Romanian F-16 aircraft have conventional capabilities, and no nuclear weapons will be used during the exercise. The activities were planned well in advance and are unrelated to current international developments. The Ministry of Defence also emphasizes that the exercise is not directed against any state, but conveys a message of unity and determination to defend all allies.
