Lia Savonea, head of the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ÎCCJ), announced that the court will refer to the competent European institutions to defend the independence of the judiciary, citing the erosion of constitutional protection.

She emphasized that the ÎCCJ has exhausted all legal internal procedures but will refer to the European institutions.

"The ÎCCJ will use all legal and institutional tools to defend it, including by referring to the competent European institutions," said Lia Savonea, after the CCR rejected her referral regarding the Bolojan Government's project that increases the retirement age of judges and reduces the amount of their service pension.

Savonea explained that the referral to the CJEU is a necessary legal instrument, not a delay tactic.
