The government has decided to remove the Cătănilu and Ungurelașu perimeters from the list of mines scheduled for closure, thus opening the way for the resumption of graphite exploitation at Baia de Fier, Gorj County. The land is targeted by a strategic project of Romania and the European Union for the development of the supply chain for raw materials intended for batteries. The investment could benefit from up to 198 million euros in European funding, and with an estimated production of 15,000 tons of graphite per year, the exploitation could generate revenues of approximately 300 million dollars annually, according to government estimates.
