General Gheorghiță Vlad, the Chief of the General Staff of the Defense, has requested to retire after being placed under criminal investigation by the National Anti-Corruption Directorate for complicity in usurpation of function. The accusations concern acts committed in July 2025, when Vlad allegedly facilitated a request to the Ministry of Education for the increase of budgeted places at the National University of Physical Education and Sport, exceeding legal responsibilities. Alongside him, General Iulian Berdilă is also a suspect in the same case, which involves suspicions of influence peddling. Both Vlad and Berdilă have denied the accusations, stating that they have committed no crime. The Minister of Defense, Radu Miruță, stated that the investigation does not affect the image of the Romanian Army.
