The French Embassy in Bucharest issued a rare statement, clarifying that the French military presence in Romania is not related to Romania's vote in favor of the EU-Mercosur trade agreement, which Paris opposes. This reaction came after comments from PSD MEP Victor Negrescu, who suggested that France might be dissatisfied with Romania's position and that there could be geostrategic consequences, including a possible withdrawal of French troops from the country.

The Embassy emphasized that the information circulating in the public space is false and that the French military presence is part of commitments to collective security and strengthening NATO's Eastern Flank. The Embassy also reaffirmed its commitment to the Franco-Roman strategic partnership and the security of the region.
