Neculai Soceanu, 64 years old and former mayor of the Roșiori commune in Brăila County, died Friday morning in a fire that broke out in his home. The fire was reported around 4:40 AM, and firefighting crews intervened at the scene. The former mayor was found charred inside the house, where the fire destroyed the roof over an area of approximately 60 square meters and belongings from two rooms.

The probable cause of the fire was an unrepaired cigarette butt with cracks. The current mayor, Nicușor Crețu, mentioned that Soceanu had been living alone since the death of his wife and was struggling with severe depression. Soceanu served as mayor for five terms, but his term ended in 2023 due to health issues.
