The mayor of Caracal resigns from office after a road accident and brain surgery

Ion Doldurea announced that he is resigning from his position as mayor of the municipality of Caracal, citing medical reasons. In a Facebook post, the mayor said that approximately six months ago he was involved in a traffic accident, when the car he was in was rear-ended by a truck while he was traveling toward Bucharest.

As a result of the accident, Doldurea underwent brain surgery to remove a blood clot. Although doctors had recommended that he avoid stress and exhaustion from the outset, the mayor says he tried to continue his work. Following a recent medical evaluation, the recommendations became categorical: “no stress, emotions, or exertion.”

The mayor’s duties have been taken over by Deputy Mayor Laurențiu Pătran, according to Caracal City Hall. Doldurea’s withdrawal brings renewed attention to his family’s connection to the tragedy in Crevedia, which occurred three years ago following explosions at an LPG station owned by the mayor’s son. Six people died, and the mayor’s son was sent to trial for manslaughter. To date, he has not been convicted.
