The mayor and his brother have been charged in the case involving the death of a 16-year-old teenager who drowned two years ago in an excavated pit at an illegal gravel pit. According to investigators, the company carrying out work in the area may be linked to the mayor’s family.
The teenager had gone with several friends to swim in the pit, where water had accumulated, but he was unable to resurface. There was no fence or sign at the site warning against access or swimming.
In addition to the charge of involuntary manslaughter, the mayor and his brother are being investigated for carrying out, modifying or extending construction works or installations on or related to waterways without the required legal approval, an offense committed on a continuing basis.
The two are also accused of conducting mineral aggregate extraction activities without authorization. The investigation will establish responsibility for the teenager’s death and the connection between the company involved in the work and the mayor’s family.
