The European Union has decided to anticipate the taxation of small packages by two years, initially scheduled for 2028, due to the alarming increase in imports from China. The European Commission (EC) proposes a tax on the processing of low-value packages, especially those coming from platforms like Shein and Alibaba, starting in 2026. This measure responds to pressure from European retailers facing unfair competition. Maros Sefcovic, the commissioner for trade, emphasized that the decision reflects Europe's commitment to strengthen its competitiveness and ensure fair conditions for local businesses.
In 2022, approximately 4.6 billion small packages entered the EU, and most of these goods did not meet European standards. This situation has raised concerns about harmful products and the ecological impact of transportation. Sefcovic highlighted the urgency of action, stating that it is essential for Europe to protect its economic interests and ensure fair competition. EU leaders will need to negotiate the details of the new tax and reach a swift agreement to address current challenges.
