The Entry/Exit System (EES) became operational in Romania on December 10, with the role of collecting biometric data, including facial images and four fingerprints, from citizens of non-EU countries who are making short stays in the European Union. This system applies to stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
Biometric data will be collected only at the first entry, and at subsequent visits, verification will be done automatically, which will reduce waiting time at the border. The EES is implemented at several border crossing points in Romania, including in the counties of Maramureș, Suceava, Botoșani, Constanța, Caraș-Severin, Timiș, and Satu Mare, as well as at the airports of Suceava and Sibiu. The data will be stored for 3 years, or 5 years in the case of entry refusal or exceeding the legal duration of stay, according to European data protection legislation.
