The Eco-Civic Foundation announced on Facebook that the Galați City Hall intends to cut down nearly 1,000 trees as part of the modernization project of the Danube Promenade. The organization accuses the local administration of not integrating mature trees, which have significant ecological value, into the investment. These trees contribute to shading the promenade, reducing the heat island effect, and supporting urban biodiversity.
The foundation has requested the administrative documents related to the project from the City Hall, but these are not available on the institution's website, and the deforestation works have already begun. Criticism of the tree cutting is supported by comments from citizens, who emphasize the benefits of trees for the stability of the promenade and air quality. The modernization project, estimated at 226 million lei, aims to transform the promenade of over 3.5 kilometers, but the controversy regarding the cutting of healthy trees persists. Mayor Ionuț Pucheanu promised a statement, and G4Media has requested official clarifications.
