A study conducted by specialists from the University of Missouri Kansas City and the University of Arizona highlighted a significant decrease in the average number of words spoken daily by adults, from approximately 16,600 in 2005 to 11,900 in 2019, representing a reduction of 28% over 14 years. The study, based on the analysis of 22 previous studies and including over 2,000 participants, suggests that this trend may affect cognitive and social development. The main identified cause is the development of digital communication, but researcher Valeria Pfeifer emphasizes that the phenomenon is not limited to young people. Social changes, such as the disappearance of multigenerational households and the replacement of direct interactions with automated solutions, contribute to the reduction of spontaneous conversations. Speaking is essential for brain development, and the lack of direct interactions can affect empathy and the ability to react. Additionally, studies suggest that verbal interactions with babies influence vocabulary development. The pandemic could exacerbate this trend, but there are positive signals, such as restricting children's access to smartphones. Specialists recommend simple gestures to encourage communication, such as daily conversations with neighbors or colleagues.
