Dictionary.com has named “maxxing” its word of the year for 2026, amid a rapid rise in its use on social media and in digital media. The term describes the effort to optimize an aspect of life to the greatest possible extent, from diet and fitness to sleep and physical appearance.
According to the platform, “maxxing” is a shortened form of the English verb “maximising” and can be used both independently and as a suffix in expressions such as “proteinmaxxing,” “fibermaxxing,” “sleepmaxxing” and “looksmaxxing.” In August 2026, its use in digital media was nearly 19 times more frequent than the monthly average in 2025.
Dictionary.com analyzed social media trends in the United States, news coverage and search data. Steve Johnson, director of lexicography at Dictionary Media Group, says the term reflects the desire to get the most out of any area, but also the pressure to pursue constant improvement.
Although it has become popular online, “maxxing” is not new. The word appeared as early as the 1990s in lyrics performed by Will Smith in the opening credits of the series “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Linguists note that the internet accelerates language change, while viral terms can be adopted, mocked or abandoned within a very short time.
