The word “supat,” which refers to the space beneath a bed, went viral on social media after an explanation posted on TikTok caught users’ attention. The term, considered unusual or even invented by many, generated thousands of reactions, jokes, and online searches.
In a popular video, it is explained that “supat” is a neuter noun, with the plural “supaturi,” and can be used in phrases such as “pisica s-a ascuns supat” (“the cat hid under the bed”). Reactions quickly followed, and internet users began jokingly proposing new shortened forms for common words and expressions.
Among the suggestions were “pestpat,” for bedsheet, “umpic,” “osutadojdămi,” and “băejnebun.” Some users even predicted the emergence of expressions such as “La mulțean!” A primary school teacher commented, however, that she would not correct a child who wrote “sub pat” instead of “supat,” considering the latter form less natural.
Interest in the term was also confirmed by dexonline, which recorded more than 1,000 searches for “supat” in just a few hours. The word is not a recent invention: it appears in older dictionaries, including DOOM 2, and was recorded as early as 1939, with the meaning “underneath the bed.”
