Secretary of State at the Ministry of Energy Cristian Bușoi: The two reactors at Cernavodă could be restarted only around mid-October, if the level of the Danube allows it

The Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant will not be reconnected to the National Energy System in the coming period, as the Danube’s flow remains low and forecasts indicate the possibility of further declines. The announcement was made by Cristian Bușoi, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Energy.

According to the official, the low level of the Danube is affecting the conditions necessary for the operation of the nuclear power plant. Without a recovery in the river’s flow, the plant cannot be reconnected to the national energy system.

Cristian Bușoi said that energy imports remain the main source covering the deficit created by the lack of nuclear energy. The authorities are monitoring developments in the hydrological situation and forecasts for the coming period in order to determine when the Cernavodă plant can be reconnected.

"The situation at Cernavodă remains uncertain. We have a forecast for the next 10 days showing that we will not have a sufficient flow level at the point where the river enters the country, nor a sufficient water level at Cernavodă to safely restart the two reactors and provide the water necessary for the reactors’ cooling pumps. Therefore, over the next 10 days, we do not foresee the possibility of reopening the Cernavodă Power Plant," Cristian Bușoi said Thursday evening on Digi 24.
