One of the two reactors at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant could be restarted at the beginning of November, after both units were shut down this summer. The information was presented on Wednesday by former State Secretary at the Ministry of Energy Cristian Bușoi at a forum dedicated to the energy sector.
The first reactor was shut down at the end of July, and the second on August 13. Restarting one of the units would increase domestic electricity production and ease pressure on the energy system during the cold season.
Bușoi pointed out, however, that resuming operations would not automatically lead to lower bills. Prices in Romania are influenced by developments in regional and European markets, as a significant share of energy is traded on the Day-Ahead Market. Long-term contracts could limit volatility for industry and major suppliers.
Romania ranked ninth in the European Union in the first half of 2026 in terms of the actual prices paid by households. In terms of purchasing power, however, electricity is among the most expensive in the EU.
