Traffic on the 26-kilometer Suplacu de Barcău–Chiribiș motorway section, located on the border between Sălaj and Bihor counties, is expected to open on December 1, Romania’s National Day. The announcement was made by Horațiu Cosma, state secretary at the Ministry of Transport, after construction progress surpassed 90%.
The contractor has completed the wearing course on 20 of the 26 kilometers and is working on the final interventions, particularly in the Suplacu de Barcău area, near the former oil drilling field and the 1.8-kilometer viaduct over the Suplacu de Barcău reservoir. Two overpasses, earthworks and the final asphalt layer are still under construction.
The opening of the section would mark the completion of a project with a history spanning more than two decades of delays, terminated contracts and restarted tenders. Construction was begun by the U.S. company Bechtel, but was abandoned and postponed repeatedly. The project was resumed in autumn 2023 by contractor Erbașu, the fourth company to work on this section of the Transilvania Motorway.
According to the Pro Infrastructure Association, the neighboring section toward Biharia could also open in December.
