Students and teachers in Romania will not attend classes on Monday, October 5, when World Education Day is observed. The date is designated as a non-working day for employees in the education system, according to the Collective Labor Agreement.
World Education Day has been celebrated annually since 1994, after being established by UNESCO. The event marks the signing, in 1966, of the UNESCO and International Labour Organization Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.
The document establishes the main rights and responsibilities of teachers at the international level. Alongside the UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel, adopted in 1997, it represents a benchmark for education policies and for protecting the teaching profession.
In Romania, World Education Day is celebrated separately from Teachers’ Day, observed on June 5. The separation of the two occasions was established starting in 2013. Classes will resume after the day off provided for staff and students in the education system.
