Călin Georgescu reportedly planned to move to Italy and seek political asylum after his judicial supervision expired

Călin Georgescu was allegedly planning to move to Italy with his family and several people from his entourage after the judicial supervision measure expired, according to sources close to the investigation. The former candidate in the 2024 presidential election was also allegedly considering applying for political asylum.

The same sources claim that Georgescu allegedly asked businessman Ionel Rusen to identify a villa in the Tuscany region. The information has not been officially confirmed. Meanwhile, investigators continue searches at Călin Georgescu’s home in Mogoșoaia, where they are looking for money and documents. According to the cited sources, documents deemed relevant to the case and to establishing links with other persons under investigation were found.

In this context, Italy is presented as a destination used by several Romanian fugitives. The cases mentioned include Alina Bica, for whom the Italian authorities ordered that her sentence be served under house arrest, as well as Ionel Arsene and Mario Iorgulescu, whose surrender procedures were challenged or refused.

A decision by the Court of Justice of the European Union established that foreign courts cannot refuse to surrender a convicted person without the consent of the state that issued the warrant. In Romania, the fugitive law provides for a prison sentence of up to three years for persons who evade serving their sentence.
