PNL MEP Siegfried Mureșan said on Monday that the results of Serbia’s parliamentary elections and the first round of Bulgaria’s presidential election demonstrate the power of the vote and send a lesson to Romania as well.
In Serbia, the political formation associated with former President Aleksandar Vučić lost the snap parliamentary elections held on October 25, 2026, to a list backed by the student movement. According to preliminary estimates, Vučić conceded defeat before the final results were published. Mureșan criticized the Serbian leader, describing him as an autocrat and an admirer of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In Bulgaria, initial results point to a presidential runoff between incumbent President Iliana Iotova and Andrey Gyurov, scheduled for November 1. Alpha Research’s parallel vote count gave them 34.6% and 32.7% of the vote, respectively.
Mureșan described Gyurov as a reformist candidate and noted that the results of the two leaders were below the expectations of some polls. The MEP maintains that voters can sanction parties and politicians, and that on election day power lies with citizens.
