Romania was among the main foreign destinations for Bulgarian citizens in August 2026, while Romanians represented the largest group of visitors from the European Union to Bulgaria, according to data from the National Statistical Institute in Sofia, released on Tuesday, September 29.
In total, Bulgarians made 1,116,200 trips abroad in August, 3.5% more than in the same month of 2025. Greece was the preferred destination, with 321,600 visits, followed by Turkey, with 288,500. Romania ranked third, with 78,900 visits, ahead of Serbia and Germany.
At the same time, Bulgaria recorded 2,221,200 visits by foreign citizens, 2.1% fewer than in August 2025. Business trips fell by 5.5%, while trips for holidays and excursions decreased by 3.9%. Almost 38% of entries, or 840,600, were transit journeys.
EU citizens accounted for 58.9% of total visits. Romanians were the largest group among them, accounting for more than 32% of visits by citizens of member states. Turks were the most numerous visitors from outside the EU, with 346,500 entries.
