The President of Pro Agro, Ionel Arion, stated that he expects over 10,000 farmers in front of the European Parliament. The protest takes place before the postponed vote on January 21, and Romanian farmers will remain in the square until 4:00 PM. Arion mentioned that, depending on the outcome of the vote, professional organizations in Romania might organize protests in Victory Square.
The Mercosur agreement, recently signed by the European Commission, is contested by farmers who fear it will lead to an increase in imports of cheap food products, affecting local farmers. They are calling for a deeper analysis of the agreement's impact on agriculture in Romania, warning that small and medium farms will be the most affected.
