The forests of Romania will be monitored through satellite images and LIDAR technology, and wood transports will be tracked with artificial intelligence.

The interim Minister of Environment, Diana Buzoianu, announced the implementation of an advanced monitoring system for forests in Romania, developed through PNRR. This system includes satellite images, video cameras, and LIDAR technology for scanning forests. Buzoianu emphasizes that illegal logging has severely affected the country's forests, and new technologies are essential in the fight against the wood mafia.

The project, with a total value of 272,605 million lei, will allow monitoring of approximately 70,000 km² of forest vegetation, generating alerts in case of suspicious changes. Additionally, 350 monitoring points for wood transport will be equipped with video cameras, correlating information with data from the SUMAL system. Buzoianu states that this system does not replace field control but makes it more efficient, contributing to better forest management.
