The population of Romania has decreased by over 4.16 million people in 35 years, with external migration contributing 63% and negative natural growth 37%, according to a specialized analysis published on Tuesday by the president of the National Institute of Statistics (INS), Tudorel Andrei, and quoted by Agerpres. It is also noteworthy that the year 2024 brought a record of emigration in the last three decades, with 50,000 permanent departures.

The year 2024, which was marked by a record of emigration, with 50,000 permanent departures, was also the year in which the PSD-PNL coalition restricted the opposition, and the presidential elections were canceled after the pro-Russian extremist candidate Călin Georgescu achieved a surprising result. At the level of the European Union, approximately 43 million people live in countries other than their country of origin, representing 10% of the EU's resident population. Romania, along with Poland and Slovakia, has a low share of emigrants but is among the countries with the largest flows of external migration.
