Alongside changes in migration flows, the National Institute of Statistics showed that Romania’s population fell to 21,557,600 people on July 1, 2026, while aging intensified: the number of people aged at least 65 reached 4.1 million, exceeding the number of children (2.94 million) by 39.2%. At the same time, the socio-demographic system also reflects the fact that migration is not merely a permanent departure, but sustains networks through which people remain connected to home.
A Diaspora Barometer (INSCOP Research for Banca Transilvania) indicates that 56% of Romanians have a direct or family connection to the diaspora, and this connection is maintained through family, money sent back home, property, and professional relationships. In the United Kingdom, previous reports also show the impact of this presence: Romanians contribute economically, but are also among the migrants perceived negatively in YouGov surveys, with nearly 50% of Britons saying they would like to see a reduction in the number of Romanian immigrants.
