According to the latest report from the European Union, Romania ranks first in the EU in terms of the number of deaths in road accidents, with a rate of 78 deaths per million inhabitants in 2024.

Road accidents represent a major problem in Europe, with nearly 20,000 deaths and 100,000 serious injuries annually. Although road deaths have decreased by 12% at the EU level since 2019, progress varies significantly among member states.

The main causes of fatal accidents include excessive speed, driving under the influence of alcohol, and driver inattention.

Road accidents generate huge economic costs, and the European Union has adopted a strategic framework for road safety 2021-2030, focused on safe roads and vehicles.

In Romania, up to 10 serious accidents occur daily on national roads.
