Romania had one of the highest road mortality rates in the European Union in 2025, with 68 deaths per million inhabitants, according to statistics presented by the European Commission. The situation is reported in the context of European efforts to reduce the number of road accident victims.
Only Bulgaria recorded a higher rate, at 71 deaths per million inhabitants, while Croatia reported 65. At the other end of the scale were Sweden, with 19 deaths per million inhabitants, and Denmark, with 24. Romania’s rate was therefore more than three times higher than Sweden’s.
A total of 19,350 people died on EU roads in 2025, 3% fewer than in 2024 and 15% below the 2019 level. However, the European Commission notes that differences between countries remain significant, with Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia continuing to have the highest road mortality rates.
Preliminary data for the first half of 2026 indicate a further decline in several member states. The European Union aims to halve, by 2030, the number of deaths and serious injuries caused by road accidents. Future results and measures will be discussed at the EU Road Safety Conference, scheduled to take place in Brussels on November 23, 2026.
