Romanians are among the biggest food wasters in Europe, throwing away approximately 150 kg of food per person annually, which amounts to over 2.5 million tons of wasted food at the national level.

Households contribute the most to this waste, followed by the HoReCa sector and retail. In the European Union, food waste comes from households in a proportion of over 50%, and each European throws away an average of 70 kg of food annually. In this context, the European Parliament has adopted a law that obliges member states to reduce food waste by 30% by 2030.

The National Food Day and Fight Against Food Waste, celebrated on October 16, coincides with World Food Day, aiming to raise awareness of the importance of access to food and food security.

Additionally, on September 29, the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, proclaimed by the UN in 2019, was marked.
