An official from the White House announced that there are no plans for American President Donald Trump to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the near future. This statement comes after Trump mentioned that he might have discussions with Putin in Budapest in the next two weeks, to talk about the war in Ukraine. Additionally, a preparatory meeting between American Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov was announced, but the White House communicated that a call between the two was sufficient and that the meeting is no longer necessary.
The White House did not provide further details about the reasons for postponing the discussions. Trump suggested the idea of freezing the Ukrainian conflict along the current front line, but Russia rejected this proposal, stating that it is only interested in a lasting peace.
