In 2024, the number of people who died in road accidents in the European Union decreased to 19,934, a reduction of 2.2% compared to 2023, according to Eurostat data.

This marks the second consecutive year of decline in road accidents. However, Romania reported the highest death rate, with 78 victims per million inhabitants, followed by Bulgaria (74) and Greece (64). In contrast, Sweden, Malta, and Denmark had the lowest rates, with 20, 21, and 24 deaths per million inhabitants, respectively. From 2014 to 2024, the EU recorded a total decrease of 17.4% in deaths from road accidents, although there were some sporadic increases in the years 2015, 2021, and 2022.

The most fatal accidents occurred in the regions of Germany, Italy, and Spain, with North Rhine-Westphalia having the most accidents, over 60,000.
