PNL MP Raluca Turcan called on Thursday for urgent measures to ensure student safety after a 15-year-old injured two classmates at a high school in Pitești. The lawmaker maintains that legislative solutions for preventing such incidents already exist, but the bills are stalled in Parliament.
Turcan stated that Romania risks facing serious attacks in schools, like those in the United States, if the authorities do not take decisions to protect children. The measures mentioned include audio-video monitoring in schools, psychological counseling for students in at-risk situations, and banning phones during classes, with the devices stored in specially designated areas.
The lawmaker also pointed to bills concerning the protection of minors from violent or harmful online content, as well as limiting access for children under 16 to social media without their parents’ consent.
The incident in Pitești occurred following a conflict. One student allegedly injured a classmate in the forearm with a cutting-and-stabbing object and physically assaulted another. One of the students was taken to hospital, while the other refused admission.
The case comes three days after, at a school in Bistrița, a seventh-grade student allegedly attacked a teacher and a classmate with a knife.
