Prime Minister Luca Niculescu announced on Friday, at the beginning of the Government meeting, that the Executive would prepare an integrated plan to improve safety in schools, following two violent attacks that occurred in less than a week in Bistrița and Pitești. The Prime Minister expressed solidarity with the injured students and teacher and stated that children’s safety is a fundamental responsibility of the state.
Immediately after the Government meeting, Niculescu was scheduled to hold a working meeting with the ministers and the responsible institutions. The plan will include clear responsibilities, prevention measures, rapid interventions, and firm sanctions for acts of violence. The Prime Minister stressed that the authorities must not react only after serious incidents occur, but must prevent such situations.
On Monday, a 13-year-old student from Bistrița attacked a teacher and a classmate who had intervened to help her with a knife. The student was transferred to the Child Psychiatry Clinic in Cluj-Napoca. On Thursday, in Pitești, a ninth-grade student struck two classmates with a machete, one of whom was taken to hospital. Prosecutors claim that the attack in Bistrița may have been premeditated.
