Wednesday’s plenary session of Parliament began with a protest by USR lawmakers, who entered the chamber carrying toy planes and placards to demand explanations about private flights taken by politicians and public officials. The lawmakers called for a vote on an investigative committee into flights to Mykonos and Nice.
The rubber planes bore the message “PSD Jet,” while the placards included questions such as “Who paid for the flights?” and “Romanians have the right to know!” USR accused PSD of trying to block efforts to uncover the truth and called for an investigation into trips made amid suspicions that public money or funds from individuals involved in the Nordis case may have been used.
The protest sparked a heated exchange between USR leader Cătălin Drulă and PSD MP Florin Manole. The latter reproached Drulă over the situation involving former Sector 1 mayor Clotilde Armand, saying that USR has “a major problem understanding the distinction between private and public.”
The Standing Bureau of the Chamber of Deputies rejected, on September 16, the request by PNL and USR to establish the committee. The initiative concerned private flights to Mykonos and Nice, allegedly attended by lawmakers, businesspeople and a judge of the Constitutional Court. Separately, the Judicial Inspection began checks into a judge’s presence on one of these flights.
