The National Federation of Edupart Parents calls on Parliament to reject, in its current form, bill B544/2026, which provides for the decriminalization of drug possession for personal use. In an online petition, the organization argues that the measure offers no real solutions for dependent persons and may affect minors, schools, and the healthcare system.
The Federation calls for maintaining a firm legal framework, as well as expanding medical, psychological, and social alternatives for consumers. Proposals include a national impact assessment, the publication of the official positions of the competent institutions, and the organization of a parliamentary debate with the participation of parents, doctors, psychologists, addiction specialists, police officers, DIICOT, and youth representatives.
The organization calls for the establishment of a functional prevention, assessment, treatment, and recovery network in all counties, as well as a special framework for minors, centered on the family, with mandatory medical and psychological assessment and measures to prevent recidivism.
The petition notes that current legislation already allows for the assessment of consumers and their inclusion in assistance programs. The Federation argues that Romania can combine a firm legal instrument with rapid referral to treatment. In this context, the experiences of Canada, Oregon, and Portugal are cited, with the organization warning that decriminalization without medical and social infrastructure does not replicate the Portuguese model.
