The Romanian Patriarchate is criticizing the bill submitted to the Senate on decriminalizing possession of drugs for personal use and is calling for discernment and responsibility in debating the initiative. The institution says any legislative change must prioritize personal health, the protection of young people, and the well-being of the family and community.
The Romanian Patriarchate’s spokesperson, Adrian Agachi, said the bill must be analyzed with concern, so that changing the legislation does not create the impression that drug use is normal or not a serious matter.
The legislative initiative, submitted by independent Senator Victoria Stoiciu and supported by Cristian Ghinea of USR and Daniel Fenechiu of PNL, provides for removing possession of drugs for personal use from the scope of criminal law. The act would be considered a contravention and sanctioned with a fine.
The Patriarchate emphasizes that preventing drug use, educating young people, and supporting families must remain priorities. Adrian Agachi firmly called for combating drug trafficking, which he said exploits people’s vulnerability and particularly affects children and adolescents.
The Romanian Orthodox Church has reaffirmed its willingness to support people affected by addiction and their families through pastoral counseling, prayer, and fraternal assistance. The Patriarchate hopes that authorities and lawmakers will seek to protect the younger generation and support victims of drug use.
