Only 68% of Romanians believe their homes can withstand the effects of climate change, 10 percentage points fewer than in 2025, according to an IRES study commissioned by UNSAR. Approximately eight in ten respondents associate climate change with extreme weather events.
Severe storms and heatwaves are the main risks mentioned by Romanians whose homes have been affected, each cited by 30% of participants. Flooding was reported by 20%, while drought was reported by 13%. The effects of these phenomena can affect both buildings and family budgets through repair costs.
To protect the environment, 71% of respondents say they recycle, while 66% have reduced their energy consumption. Separate waste collection, reducing water consumption and thermal insulation are also among the measures adopted.
When it comes to adapting homes, 35% would opt for heat pumps or energy-efficient systems. UNSAR recommends prevention and insurance, given that the mandatory PAD policy covers only certain risks, such as earthquakes, natural floods and landslides.
