The European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) announced on Tuesday that it has dismantled an international network trafficking in counterfeit condoms, confiscating products in Spain, Romania, and Serbia.
OLAF's Director General, Petr Klement, highlighted the dangers associated with these products, which are untested and do not meet safety standards. Over 200,000 counterfeit condoms, sold under the brand of a well-known manufacturer, have been identified across Europe, all originating from a common source in China.
Chinese authorities have collaborated with the European Union to identify the exporter, but OLAF did not provide details about any potential legal actions against them. In the European Union, condoms are considered medical devices and must meet strict quality standards. A recent WHO report highlighted an alarming decline in condom use among European adolescents since 2014.
