This year, the Swedish Academy could reward a European man, following the historic choice of an Asian woman, Han Kang, in 2022. Among the mentioned candidates are Kracht, a Swiss postmodernist novelist, as well as Mircea Cărtărescu from Romania. The Academy promised to diversify the awards, both geographically and linguistically, after the #MeToo scandal in 2018, but the majority of laureates remain Western writers.
