President Nicușor Dan stated that Romania will not have a response to the closure of the Romanian Consulate in St. Petersburg, a measure of reciprocity from the Russian Federation. This was announced during the Eastern Flank Summit, held in Gdańsk, Poland, on June 25, 2026. Russia's decision came after Romania expelled the Russian consul from Constanța and closed the consulate, following an incident in which a Russian drone hit a block in Galați, injuring two Romanian citizens.
Nicușor Dan emphasized that Romania's actions were proportional and that there is no justification from Russia for the closure of the Romanian consulate. The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the Romanian ambassador to Moscow was summoned to be informed about the Russian decision. Russia's reaction was anticipated, considering the previous threats from the spokesperson of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Romanian Consulate in St. Petersburg was established in 2003 and was led by an interim head.
