Context: Romania requests NATO support and warns of Russian pressure following drone incidents in the Black Sea
Following the drone incidents in the Black Sea, President Nicușor Dan announced that Romania would once again request military support from NATO allies, explaining that the authorities cannot yet confirm the origin of the drones involved. He linked this defense need to the urgency of obtaining equipment until the development of its own capabilities, mentioning the country’s participation in the European SAFE program.
At the same time, the head of state placed the reported attacks in the region within a broader context of destabilization and reduced support for Ukraine, saying that Russia is seeking to heighten tensions within European societies. The president discussed the situation with the NATO secretary general and announced that events in the region would be analyzed during a dedicated session of the North Atlantic Council.
At the same time, Romania and Bulgaria announced that they would cooperate on stronger measures to counter drones at the European level and within NATO, following attacks on commercial vessels. Meanwhile, Nicușor Dan described the violation of airspace as “inadmissible and intolerable” and said that the diplomatic protest against Russia would be based on the results of investigations into the downed drones.
