President Nicușor Dan announced on Wednesday that the Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT) approved the request from the USA to temporarily host military equipment at Mihail Kogălniceanu base, but that a decision will be made in Parliament. According to him, this concerns defensive equipment.
"It involves refueling aircraft, monitoring equipment, and satellite communications in correlation with the shield at Deveselu. As long as Parliament approves in session, they will be deployed at the Romania-USA partnership base, a similar collaboration these days with a collaboration that other NATO countries are doing. These are defensive equipment. Romanians have no reason to worry," said Nicușor Dan.
Digi24 reported on Wednesday morning from sources that the request from the USA refers to tanker aircraft and up to 300 military personnel.
Initially, on Tuesday evening, information appeared in the Romanian press that the USA requested to host fighter jets at Mihail Kogălniceanu base.
The announcement comes after the Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT) met on Wednesday morning to discuss the United States' request to deploy additional aircraft and military personnel at the military base in Mihail Kogălniceanu, in Constanța County, against the backdrop of the war in the Middle East between the USA-Israel and Iran.
What was on the agenda:
"The situation in the Middle East, implications for Romania; Assessment of the impact of events in the Middle East on the oil market in Romania; Analysis of the temporary deployment of military capabilities on Romanian territory."
