Romanian President Nicusor Dan has been invited to the second summit between the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), scheduled for October 24 in Saudi Arabia. According to Arab News, the invitation was conveyed by King Salman bin Abdulaziz.
The Saudi monarch’s official message was delivered on Monday by Ambassador Khalid bin Eid Al-Shammari during a meeting with Marius-Gabriel Lazurca, the presidential adviser for national security. The meeting took place at Cotroceni Palace and focused both on the Romanian head of state’s participation in the summit and on bilateral relations between Romania and Saudi Arabia.
The officials discussed identifying new opportunities for cooperation between the two countries. The October meeting will bring together representatives of the 27 European Union member states and the six GCC countries: Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
The summit will provide a framework for dialogue on economic cooperation, energy and environmental protection. EU-GCC relations are based on an agreement concluded in 1989, covering areas such as energy, combating climate change, research and economic relations.
