Prime Minister Luca Niculescu called, at the government meeting on October 30, for work to begin next year on the construction of a modern center in Bucharest for adults with severe burns. The request was made on the day marking 11 years since the Colectiv nightclub tragedy, in which dozens of people died and numerous survivors were left with serious injuries.

Niculescu said that the major burns centers in Timișoara and Târgu Mureș have been built and are in the final stage of preparation to become operational. The children’s center at the “Grigore Alexandrescu” Hospital in Bucharest is also at an advanced stage. The prime minister asked Health Minister Alexandru Rogobete to work with the Ministry of Finance to establish solutions and a realistic timeline.

The government also discussed the new cabinet’s first budget adjustment. The additional funds are expected to cover medicines, medical supplies, healthcare services, pensions, and benefits for children and people with disabilities. Funding is earmarked for local administrations, agriculture, and projects financed through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

The government also announced a three-month extension of measures limiting increases in diesel prices. In the context of the sabotage at Carfil Brașov and the worsening security situation in the Black Sea, the prime minister called for increased protection of critical infrastructure.

Context: Concerns Regarding Health Financing and Delays in the NRRP, Ahead of the Government Discussion

Previously, Prime Minister Luca Niculescu announced that the Government would make a decision at Friday’s meeting to unlock the financing necessary for the healthcare system through urgent budget adjustments, so that medical staff and patients would not face difficulties. The statement was made at the handover ceremony of the new Tuberculosis Diagnosis, Treatment and Research Center to the “Marius Nasta” Institute, where the prime minister said that healthcare financing must be viewed as a long-term investment.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Alexandru Rogobete spoke about investments in medical infrastructure and mentioned payment delays for works financed through the NRRP, saying that part of the investment had initially been covered from the contractor’s own funds, while the financing was unlocked in June to recover the arrears and continue the project.
