Prime Minister Luca Niculescu called on Friday, at the beginning of the Government meeting, for intensified security measures and efforts to protect critical infrastructure following the sabotage at the Carfil industrial facility in Brașov.
The head of government said the incident had demonstrated how real the threats to the defense industry, state security and citizens are. He thanked representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for strengthening security at critical infrastructure and other sites, as well as those from DIICOT and the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) for their actions.
Niculescu said that on Thursday he had discussed with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte the deteriorating security situation in the Black Sea region and the intensification of hybrid threats against allied states on the Eastern Flank. The prime minister said that Russia’s escalation of tensions calls for increased vigilance and a firm, coordinated allied response.
DIICOT and SRI announced on Monday that they had documented the activities of a sabotage network coordinated from the Russian Federation. Three foreign nationals—two Belarusians and one Ukrainian—residing in European Union member states are alleged to have been involved in the explosion at Carfil Brașov, a subsidiary of Romarm.
