Nicu Ștefănuță, Vice-President of the European Parliament, addressed the European Commission with a question regarding compensation for Romanian consumers affected by the historic fines imposed on banks by the Competition Council. He emphasized that ten credit institutions have been sanctioned with total fines of 3.73 billion lei for violating competition rules, including coordinating behavior in setting the ROBOR index.

Ștefănuță highlighted that Romanians who have paid higher rates due to these practices must have real access to compensation, without being obliged to initiate individual lawsuits. He requested clarifications regarding the possibility of direct compensation for consumers and emphasized the need for European support to facilitate the recovery of funds. He also asked the Commission whether requiring consumers to act individually is compatible with European Union law. Ștefănuță is an independent MEP and a member of the Greens group in the European Parliament.
