The interim Minister of Environment, Diana Buzoianu, announced the initiative to create a national fund dedicated to investments in flood prevention infrastructure, such as dams and levees, with estimated funding needs between 26.8 billion and 40 billion lei over the next 15 years, depending on allocation scenarios.

The draft law aims to ensure equity in the system and to respond to critical works that cannot be carried out with current budgets. Buzoianu warned that the lack of investments increases risks for communities and generates additional costs for the state. The project was developed following negotiations with the European Commission, eliminating the direct water tax for the population.

The budget for flood prevention infrastructure has been increased from 50 million to 250 million lei this year, with the aim of reducing climate risks and protecting communities.
