'The Sirens' Wednesday' is a national exercise organized by the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) to test the functioning of public warning systems. It usually takes place on the first Wednesday of the month or during 'Civil Protection Week'. At 10:00 AM, the sirens in Bucharest and other localities will emit specific sounds. The Sector 1 City Hall has warned citizens not to panic, emphasizing that it is a routine exercise. The sounds emitted vary depending on the type of alert: disaster alarm (5 sounds of 16 seconds each), air pre-alarm (3 sounds of 32 seconds each), air alarm (15 short sounds of 4 seconds each), and alarm cessation (a continuous sound for 2 minutes). In Bucharest, there are approximately 400 sirens, but only 155 are fully functional, and most can be activated centrally. This exercise aims to ensure the population's preparedness in the face of emergency situations.
