The mayor of Iași, Mihai Chirica, reacted on Facebook to the criticisms of the people of Iași regarding the stopping of public lighting at night, stating that the measure is necessary for the rationalization of energy consumption in the context of a national energy crisis. Chirica thanked those who support this decision, highlighting the responsibility of the community in the face of the energy difficulties caused by the prolonged drought and the lowering of the Danube's level, which affects power plants.
He mentioned that lighting will be turned off after midnight, except for essential places for safety, and emphasized that public transport and major companies in Iași will continue normal operations. Despite the explanations, many residents of Iași criticized the decision, demanding a return to nighttime public lighting, expressing their dissatisfaction on social media. The mayor reaffirmed that this measure is temporary and intended to protect the city's energy balance.
