Maia Sandu, the president of the Republic of Moldova, announced the restoration of the Moldovan citizenship of former Romanian president Traian Băsescu, which was revoked in 2017 by Igor Dodon. The decision was made after Sandu received a request signed by Băsescu, which was necessary to resume the legal process. During her online show 'Political Journal', Maia Sandu explained that she acted according to legal procedures once the request was submitted.
Traian Băsescu confirmed on Facebook the receipt of citizenship and thanked the president, reaffirming his commitment to the integration of the Republic of Moldova into the European Union and reunification with Romania. Băsescu initially obtained Moldovan citizenship in 2016, but it was revoked a year later. As president, he promoted policies favorable to the regaining of Romanian citizenship for Moldovan citizens.
